London-based firm Alison Brooks Architects has won one of London's 2008 Housing Design Project Awards, announced in July. The firm, headed up by Canadian-born and Waterloo, ON-trained Alison Brooks, won in the project award category for its proposal for three buildings for Tribeca, a new residential development in Liverpool.

When one thinks of cutting-edge design, the name Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg doesn’t exactly spring to mind. But it should. Celebrating 260 years of making pristine porcelain figurines, the Munich company is a great example of how to keep cranking out the bread-and-butter baubles that lube its economic engine – while remaining relevant to the changing appetites of collectors. American photographer Lee Friedlander spent years criss-crossing America on road trips; he became particularly obsessed with the theme of American monuments, scaled to everyday life. This summer, the Center of Creative Photography in Tucson, AZ, is mounting a Friedlander retrospective that celebrates the roadside landscape Friedlander so lovingly documented. If you needed another reason to visit Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre this summer, look no further. Design, art and fashion come together with Kathryn Walter’s Shelter, a window display at the York Quay Gallery. The artist is quick to clarify that what she's showing is not “fashion” but rather “haute couture survival gear.” The window display certainly makes her work look fashion-like, but the materials and presentation blur the line between couture and camping.
