Last week Azure checked out a pop-up shop in Toronto that features the highly anticipated clothing line by Douglas Coupland for Roots.

A hip gallery on Toronto's happening Queen Street West is hosting a temporary shop for  the Canada Goes Electric line by Coupland, until July 25 (the collection has also popped up at a second location, in Coupland's hometown of Vancouver). Inside the Narwhal Art Projects gallery, Gen-Xers and other Coupland fans can check out his full range for the Canadian clothing brand – a first for Coupland, who sees his new line, including T-shirts, leggings, skirts, hoodies, tanks and more, as yet another art project. To drive home the point, the gallery is also stocking updated versions of Coupland's Hockey Night in Canada stools, skateboard decks, and standalone art pieces: The brightly painted canoe suspended above the merch is also for sale.

In a departure from Roots' usual tourist-friendly Canadiana, this fashion and accessories collection is distinctly Coupland. Inspired by Canada's natural landscape, which Coupland interprets as a mass-media phenomenon – one that is broadcast through electronic signals, transmissions, test patterns and radio waves – his pieces are fittingly embellished with television test screen colour bars, motherboard circuitry, and pixelated and patchwork patterns. One of the standouts is a Roots laptop bag, which signifies a return to the company's signature leather goods. It comes in a choice of three colours and conveys a relatively classic, stylish restraint.

For those who can't make it to the pop-up shop before it closes for good, Coupland's creations are already available at select Roots locations.

Check out this Q&A between the prolific graphic designer Steven Heller and Coupland on the AIGA's web site to learn more about the Generation X-Wear for Roots.
